Curriculum Overview
Curriculum at Heathfield
International School, Vientiane (HISV)
At HISV, we deliver the Oxford International Curriculum (OIC) across all key stages.
The OIC is based on the National Curriculum of England, offering a clear, rigorous and globally transferable learning pathway.

Our Philosophy

We believe in providing a curriculum that nurtures the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally and creatively. British education is respected worldwide for its quality and consistency. One of its greatest strengths is its transferability, enabling students to move smoothly between countries or return to the UK without disruption.
The Oxford International Curriculum provides:
Globally Recognised Standards
Well-Structured Learning
Consistent Academic Progress
Key Features of the
Oxford International Curriculum
B British education is respected internationally for its clarity, structure, and high standards. With the Oxford International Curriculum (OIC), students experience transferable learning that supports smooth transitions between countries while ensuring strong academic foundations.
1 . Differentiated and Engaging Learning
The OIC includes detailed lesson plans that allow teachers to fine-tune activities to stretch high achievers and support learners who need additional reinforcement.
2 . Wellbeing at the Heart of Education
Wellbeing lessons help students understand that a healthy lifestyle supports a healthy mind—improving focus and resilience.
3 . Collaborative, Creative Projects
Project-based learning encourages students to work together to explore real-life issues. They learn to communicate, innovate and present ideas—skills essential for the modern world.
4 . Professional Growth for Teachers
The OIC also provides meaningful professional development, helping teachers grow as reflective practitioners and lifelong learners.
5 . Project-Based Learning
The curriculum actively cultivates curiosity, critical thinking, empathy, emotional intelligence, decision-making, problem-solving, self-awareness and confidence. Through enquiry-based learning, children explore core values such as integrity, fairness, kindness, responsibility and respect, helping them grow both academically and personally.

Preparing Future-Ready Learners
Learning for Tomorrow
We are preparing our students for a world where they may work in careers and use technologies that do not yet exist. Our curriculum emphasises:
Adaptability
Creative and critical thinking
Personal learning and thinking skills
Independence and confident communication
By nurturing these abilities, we empower young people to thrive in a rapidly evolving global environment.
Personal Development
At HISV, personal development is woven into daily teaching, helping students grow into individuals who:
Demonstrate respect
Strive for excellence
Accept accountability
Approach challenges with optimism
These qualities are nurtured through continuous reflection, guidance and positive reinforcement.
International Mindedness and Global Awareness
We encourage our students to appreciate diversity and celebrate culture. Students learn to:
Understand similarities across cultures
Respect differences in beliefs and customs
Develop empathy and a global perspective
This prepares them to be thoughtful, responsible global citizens.

Problem-Solving and Thinking Skills
We emphasise the process of learning as much as the outcome. Students are encouraged to:
Ask questions
Investigate and explore
Form hypotheses
Define objectives
Apply reasoning
In mathematics, for example, students learn to choose appropriate strategies rather than rely solely on rote memorisation.
Computing and Technology
Technology is integrated across the curriculum to equip students with essential digital skills.
From Year 1, students receive dedicated Computing lessons in a fully equipped ICT lab. Older students use tablets and digital tools to support research, collaboration and creativity.
